US Presidency in Comic Book History
US Presidency in Comic Book History 0

Now I know we are already in March, this blog post was originally written before the ice storm so forgive the delay! President’s day was February 15th during Houston’s historic ice storm and I figured then when I started writing this that it was the perfect time to address the many Presidents who have made appearances (or implied appearances) in the pages of our favorite issues (some of which are pretty bizarre!) and of course discuss several of the fictional presidents and campaigns featured in both the DC and Marvel Universes. Of course this list is not at all every president or storyline that has appeared in comics, just a few I really enjoy. We have these and so many more still in our back issues at all of our six Houston area stores so be sure to come on by!

WandaVision: Why you should read Vision by Tom King
WandaVision: Why you should read Vision by Tom King 0

The twelve issue maxi-series released in 2015 has long been my favorite work of King’s and that says quite a bit given his many volumes of work. Vision is a story of the titular character and his Midwestern modern nuclear (literally) family he creates for himself in trying to create a normal human life.

What to Read Before Wonder Woman 1984
What to Read Before Wonder Woman 1984 0

While Warner Brothers' deal to release 2020/2021’s blockbuster films on streaming as well as cinemas has been contentious with film fans at best, I am beyond excited that we are finally going to be able to watch Wonder Woman 1984 this Christmas from the safety of our homes. While we’re finally nearing the end of that wait, we wanted to provide a reading list for the colorful characters appearing in this film such as Cheetah, Maxwell Lord, and some of Wondy’s greatest stories that we think may tie into this sequel. Here are some titles we recommend so time to do your best Wonder Woman spin, pull up a book and get ready!

    Star Wars: the High Republic
Star Wars: the High Republic 0

    What is the High Republic?

The High Republic takes place 200 years before the events of the Skywalker Saga even begins, namely before the Phantom Menace. It focuses on a time of peace and expansion in the galaxy, where the Jedi order is at its peak, and its strength helps protect the Republic as it expands towards the outer rim. The edges of the galaxy are known as the frontier, where Jedi are pioneers against unknown forces like the nomadic and dangerous Nihil. With this renaissance in discovery and exploration for the Republic; many new threats to the galaxy and the force itself emerge on our new heroes, blending into the events of the timeline we all know and love.

Native American Heritage Month in Comics

November is Native American Heritage month and I wanted to not only highlight native characters in comics but also provide a commentary on how they have been routinely stereotypically portrayed and what steps some comic companies are taking to change this.

US History in Comics for 'Hamilton' Fans
US History in Comics for 'Hamilton' Fans 0

It’s a bit late in the month for an Independence Day post but I know in quarantine many a viewer, myself included, have been watching the American Musical Hamilton on Disney+ (over and over and over again) to celebrate what we can while indoors. In 2015, Hamilton took the musical world by storm and now finally it’s available to all viewers and it’s still just as incredible in the way it opened the door to Broadway and to making history more accessible for all people and for those who want to know even more I highly recommend these historical titles to help you keep the Hamilton train going NONNNN-STOP. American history has long been chronicled in comic books with a majority of our favorite heroes being born in the World War II era but you can find a wealth of comics and graphic novels depicting the birth of our nation. If you’re a musical lover or a history buff you’ll love these titles that give us a change in perspective on the events that shaped our nation and inspire us to this day!

June is Pride Month though this year has been a hard one for celebrations, we can still read and appreciate LGBTQ+ literature from home! As always, this list is far from all encompassing but I wanted to show and celebrate some of my all time favorite titles and showcase the representation in comic history and graphic novels. Come on down to any Bedrock City Comics location and stock up on some reading material and as always I hope you all enjoy! Stay safe, Bedrock Citizens and Happy Pride!

    Honoring Essential Workers in Comics
Honoring Essential Workers in Comics 0

In light of the ongoing pandemic, our eyes have turned to the importance of essential workers to keep us going and in this article I want to highlight those heroes in the comic book collective consciousness that have a dual identity saving the world in the ways we need most right now. Grocery store workers, health professionals, garbage collectors, teachers, and more we owe a debt we can never repay and this list is by no means all inclusive but I hope you’re able to take the time to think of and thank an essential worker today and thank you for thinking of your local comic book store!

    Comics and Hope

Our current events are some of the most trying times a lot of us have lived through and it can
be difficult to remain optimistic for the future. But something we can all take solace in is that
we are not in this alone. Historically, comic books have been there for us through some of the
worst times in our modern history and remind us of a brighter tomorrow for all of humanity.
Many of us are stuck inside overwhelmed by the whirlwind of bad news that seems never
ending but I’ve compiled a list of graphic novels that remind us that better times are ahead for
all of us. We here at Bedrock City Comics are here to remind you that we are here for you and
to remind you that we are all in this together. Here’s just a few comics I recommend to remind
you that all is not lost as long as we keep moving forward. I hope you enjoy and stay safe and
    stay strong, Bedrock Citizens!

It’s no question that Dungeons and Dragons has had a huge resurgence in popularity in recent years thanks to the likes of shows and podcasts but it is also a testament to table top RPG’s ease of access as it continues its reign and likely will for years to come. But of course with things like scheduling with your groups and other outside factors you can go quite some time in between sessions but luckily your local comic shop has the perfect titles for any TTRPG lover to hold you over!
