Women in Comics: Sarah Vaughn & Leila del Duca
Today, we look into two modern comics heavy hitters, Sarah Vaughn, co-creator of Alex & Ada, and Leila Del Duca of award-winning Shutter fame.
Sleepless Volume 1 (2018) written by Sarah Vaughn and drawn by Leila del Duca
Lady "Poppy" Pyppenia is guarded by the Sleepless Knight Cyrenic but becomes endangered when an assassin threatens her life in the new king's reign. As Poppy and Cyrenic try to discover who wants her dead, they must navigate the dangerous waters of life at court and of their growing feelings for one another.
Rich in Italian Renaissance and 16th century Moroccan inspired design, Sarah Vaughn and Leila del Duca craft a gorgeous, fantastical world of romance, political intrigue and sleepless knights (haha, get it?! Knights! Instead of nights?! *ahem*) where a young woman must survive a changing political climate under her half-brother’s rule. The styling and detail alone draw you in immediately and keep you throughout the entire issue, and if your a history of fashion nerd like me, the sheer amount of detailing creates an amazing atmosphere.
Once you’re hooked, you’re ensnared in a world on the brink of utter chaos. Our heroine Lady Poppy is combated by sinister forces determined to see her dead because of her illegitimate status. Accompanying her is the mysterious Cyrenic, knight who has sworn to be her “sleepless” protector, and magical oath that keeps him from sleeping, so that he is constantly awake and aware. But not without consequences, as he begins to hallucinate shortly before the first assassination attempt. The plot thickens and keeps you on your toes as you slowly uncover what dark secrets unfold in front of you. Also, did I mention Poppy has a pet fennec fox?
